The single biggest question we get asked is "Do I need a BA degree to teach in Thailand"?

Like all things in Thailand, you'll get 10 different answers from 10 different people so we decided to put the question to the The Teachers Council of Thailand. Guess what? We got 5 different answers from the 5 people we spoke to!

We did manage to get a general consensus though and here it is:

Foreign Teachers must have a BA degree in any subject and are required to take a 20 hour Thai culture  course-( 3 Days) -during their teaching contract year, in order to qualify a work permit to teach in Thailand.

A TEFL certificate is not required by the TCT but is normally requested by employers.

We asked if there are any exceptions to these rules and the answer was:

If a teacher has 2 years teaching experience they may be considered for a work permit without having a BA Degree.

If there is a shortage of teachers in a particular area, the TCT may accept non degree teachers at their discretion, if the teacher is sponsored by a local school.

(I should add: and happens to know one of the officers in the local labor department)

One of our agents in the South of Thailand is looking for teachers with or without a BA degree to start in May and October this year. You must have a TEFL and there are just 12 places available so contact us for more information.

Ok so I don't have to have a BA or I do have to have one, which is it?
One one page you say I don't have to have one, but on another page it is the law that I have to have one in order to get a work permit.
You say it is up to the school to look at your paper work, but the MoE has to see copies. It looks like you will have to have a BA to show the MoE in order to get a work permit. What's the deal here?
I can break the law and teach without a work permit?
Where in the South of Thailand are they needing the teachers?
Thanks,

George

Hi George,

Legally you need a BA degree to teach but there are always exceptions in Thailand. We know of quite a few teachers who were able to get work permits without showing any degree as they had a local school who sponsored them. They need teachers in Trang and Surrathanni.

I too don't have a degree - I'm nearly 4 years into an Open Uni degree in MFL - but have q TEFL qualification and several years tutoring/mentoring experience. I would be very grateful for some advice. Thank you.

I too am interested to know whether the Open Uni degree is valid for use in Thailand as I have been informed the M.o.E will not accept degrees with an online or correspondence element.
